In April，2018，Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and Chinese President, inspected the Boao Le Cheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone. He listened to the reports by Academician Li Lanjuan about the situation of the Boao Super Hospital. General Secretary Xi stressed that the people's sense of gain, happiness and security is inseparable from health. We should vigorously develop the health cause and be a healthy nation.

Boao Super Hospital, located in the Boao Le Cheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone in Hainan, officially opened in March 2018. The hospital is an innovative general hospital operating under the "1+X" (i.e. "one shared hospital platform + several academicians and expert-led specialties") shared hospital model. The hospital enjoys pilot implementation of the Nine preferential policies and the preferential policies of Hainan Free Trade Port.

The hospital is a designated institution for medical insurance, with local and inter-provincial settlement for outpatient and inpatient services. The hospital has 150 beds and 5 operating rooms, one of which is a comprehensive operating room. The hospital is equipped with a medical imaging centre with 64-row CT, 128-row Dual Helical CT, 3.0T MRI, Magnetically Controlled Capsule Endoscopy and other first-class diagnostic and medical examination equipment.

In the past four years, the hospital has focused on the development of the platform and  become a talents gathering place. The unique new model of sharing hospital and the open concept of operation have attracted many academicians and other domestic top medical experts and their teams. The team of Academician Li Lanjuan from the Department of Infectious Diseases, Academician Zheng Shusen from the Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery, Academician Zhang Zhiyuan from the Department of Stomatology and Maxillofacial Surgery, Academician Han Demin from the Department of Otolaryngology, Academician Ge Junbo from the Department of Cardiology, Professor Fang Pihua from the Department of Cardiology, Professor Zhang Xuejun from the Department of Dermatology and other 22 academician expert teams are stationed in the Super Hospital, and there are two academician’s workstations. With the help of academician experts, the hospital has opened more than 20 specialized department. Cardiology Department, Ear, Nose and Throat Department , Liver and Gallbladder Oncology Department have become the advantageous brand departments in the Le Cheng Advance Zone after 3 years of construction.

The hospital has continued to introduce international innovative medicines and equipment, and has completed the first domestic application of the lipid-lowering drug Inclisiran, the first domestic application of licensed Austria MED-EL, AUS Cochlear and US Advanced Bionics cochlear implants, the first domestic clinical application of COMBO Coronary Stents System, the first domestic application of Mira AV Transcatheter Leadless Pacemaker System, the first domestic application of fourth-generation cryoballoon catheter Ablation System for atrial fibrillation, the first domestic application of licensed Secukinumab for Psoriasis, and the first domestic application of Yttrium-90 Resin Microspheres for liver cancer and more than 80 other pilot projects. This allows domestic patients to get innovative pharmacological treatment without leaving the country and in sync with the international developments. Gastrointestinal stromal tumour innovative drug Ripretinib and other tumour-based oral drugs have been approved of taking away from the Pilot Zone for urgent clinical needs, which is an important achievement in the early stage of the construction of Hainan's free trade port.

Boao Super Hospital participated in co-establishing the country's first key laboratory for Real World Data research and evaluation, initiating real-world data research on more than 20 licensed products.The Real World Study accelerate the pace of global innovative medicines and equipment being available in China, reduce costs and enable more Chinese patients to benefit from leading global medicines and equipment as soon as possible.
